Demographic Attributes in geography



Through demographic attributes, we can get the demographic information of population like

  • Age structure, population pyramid, Race, Ethnicity, Caste,
  • Sex ratio, Literacy ratio, 
  • Birth rate, Death rate, fertility rate,
  • Population density
  • Migration
  • The skills of the population, Socio, and economic factors of the population.

The following are some definition of demographic attributes:

  • Crude birth rate: (CBR)= total number of live birth per 1000 population in the year in a geographic area. CBR below 10 is considered a low birthrate and above 20 considered the high birth rate of the population.
  • Crude death rate (CDR)= total number of death per 1000 population in the year in given geographic areas. CDR below 10 is considered a low death rate and above 20 is considered a high death rate.
  • Sex ration= measured by female to male ratio. for example, Sex ration in India is 940 that means there is 940 Female in 1000 male.
  • Fertility rate=the average number of children birth per woman lifetime. 2.1 fertility rate is called replacement rate of the population

Decent and accurate information on demographic attributes helps in understanding the problem faced by a country. For example, Country like Japan and  Germany has an inverted pyramid. Through this information, we get to know the followings:
  • The government expenditure is going to increase in the future in pension & healthcare 
  • The working-age population is going to decrease in future
  • The government needs to plan the shortage of manpower in the future.
  • The government may incentified individuals to increase the population.

In India, as per 2011 Census data,  the following demographic attributes are:
  • Sex ratio: 940
  • Fertility rate: 2.33 in 2016.
  • Literacy rate: total: 74 %
    • Male: 82.14 %
    • Female: 65.46 %
  • Decreasing order of literacy rate, state-wise: 
    • Kerala, Lakshwadeep, Mizoram, Tripura, Goa
  • Population density decreasing order, state-wise: 
    • Bihar, West Bengal, Kerala, UP, Haryana
  • Population by the state in decreasing order: 
    • UP, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh
  • Sex ration decreasing order, state-wise: 
    • Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andra Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Meghalaya
  • Decreasing order of religion in India
    • Hindu, Muslim, Christian. Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, and Parsi
