Satellite towns UPSC


Nowadays, satellite towns are an important part of settlement planning as the satellite town helps to ease the overcrowded burden of the metro city and absorb the economic pressure. 
Satellite towns may be new or old which is separated from the metro city by some physical barriers such as a hill, river, etc. It is completely or partially free from the dependence from metros city but functionally dependent on the metro city.

Some example of  satellite towns:
  • The satellite city of Mumbai is the Navi-Mumbai and Pune.
  • Delhi has many satellite cities such as Meruth, Noida, Gurgaon, and  Ghaziabad. 
  • In the USA, nearly 50 % of the urban population stays in satellite cities, the satellite city of New York city is Allentown.

The satellite city has all the possibility to become a metro city or central business district in the future.

The following are characteristics of the satellite town may be found: 


  • Completely or partially self-dependent from the metro city
  • Having good entertainment facilities
  • Having a residential area of rich people who do not want to live in a metro city due to pollution. 
  • Manufacturing & services activities for own population & for the metro city.
  • It is a result of the spread-out effect of metros city.
  • Physical barriers such as rivers, hills, or villages may be found in between metro city & satellite city. 
Types of satellite town:
Based on the main activities or functions, the following two types of satellite town found;


  • Manufacturing satellite town which manufactures the goods for metros city.
  • Consumer satellite town,  the following are consumers of goods & service in the satellite towns:
    • The residence area of rich people
    • Administration office, the corporate offices, etc
Why satellite town is developed: 
The following are the main reasons:
  • To decrease the population pressure in the metro city.
  • To fulfill the demand for goods & services to a metro city.
  • Government policy to develop a new city. For example, smart city development
  • It provides spacious space for both rich & poor population
  • Cheaper lands as compared to the metro city.
  • Well paned set up can be established 

What are the Problems facing in India?

  • Lack of basic support such as road, good health & education system
  • Lack of economic activities & employment generation
  • Poor connectivity to the metro city
