Why India does not need NSG membership?

First of all, What is NPT?

NPT is a discrimination treaty that only recognized the five nuclear countries who is also a permanent member of UNSC( i.e, USA, Russia, UK, France & China). Whoever is signing this treaty apart from five UNSC permanent member:

Can not nuclear test and can use nuclear material only for the peaceful purpose, not for a weapon

if already have a nuclear weapon, then it must have to destroy after signing the NPT.

India along with Israel & Pakistan does not sign because NPT does not recognize India as a nuclear state. If India signed the NPT than India have to destroy its nuclear weapons.

What is NSG?

The full name of NSG is the Nuclear Supplier Group. NSG group was created in response to India's Pokharan nuclear test 1974. Generally two main purposes of this group:

  1. To prevent the export of advanced technology related to nuclear & nuclear materials to Non-NSG member countries.
  2. To force countries to sign the NPT (non-proliferation treaty).

At present in 2019, 48 countries icluding China are the members of elite NSG. It is one of the four export control regime group. Apart from NSG, India got membership in the other 3 export control regimes.

  • In 2016, India joined MTCR.
  • In 2017, India joined wassenar agreement.
  • In 2018, India joined the Australia group.

The interesting thing is, although China had applied membership of above all three groups, due to a bad track record, China is not yet a member of 3 out of 4 export control regime groups.

India had applied for the NSG membership but China blocked India entry in NSG due to India is non-signatory of NPT.

What does India want from NSG?

Mainly two things India wants:

1. Nuclear enrichment technology: India has own nuclear enrichment technology but not as developed as France, the USA, Russia.

2. Nuclear materials.

Why India does not need NSG membership?

In 2006, India's USA nuclear treaty, under this India will be able to get the benefit for nuclear plants.
In 2008, the USA proposed to give NSG waiver to India to get much nuclear technology without joining NSG.

India already getting many benefits because of these two provision by the USA. The only things need as of now is Nuclear enrichment technology. But this technology, India will not get after joining the NSG because as of NSG rule, this technology will be transfer to those countries only who are the signatory of NPT.

That why India does not need NSG.

What will get India after joining NSG?

  • Boost of India image.
  • Boost in a permanent UNSC seat
  • The rare country who not signed NPT but got NSG membership.

So India should not waste time getting NSG membership. India should focus on solar, wind, biogas, etc energy source for energy security.
