Garbage In, Garbage Out

What is Garbage?
Garbage has both useful and non-useful components. Useful and non-useful is the relative terms, some person throws away the materials that are not useful for him but it may be useful for others.
For example, the broken bucket may be used for flowerpot for others.
Garbages generated from:

  • Plastic bags, Tins, Wrapping materials
  • Unused materials
  • ticket when we get off bus, trains
  • Sharpening pencils for fun
  • tear off sheet
  • Domestic waste:
  • Broken toy
  • Old cloths
  • Shoes
  • Slippers
  • Kitchen waste

How we deal with garbage?

  • In the landfill:
    • Garbages are thrown in low lying open areas called the landfill. Useful components of the garbage are separated out in landfill and unuseful components are to spread over the landfill and covered with the soils. Once the landfill is filled, it converted to the park and playground.
  • To make Manure:
    • You must have seen two kinds of color of dustbin in your city areas:
    • Blue Bin:
      •  Material that can be used again. It is non-biodegradable in nature, for example, Tin, Plastic bags.
      • Waste collected in Blue bin should be recycled

      • Green Bin:
        • Waste that can't be used again, it is a biodegradable waste, for example, Kitchen waste.
        • Waste collected in Green bin should be used for Vermi Computing(one type of manure making)

    How to do Vermi Composting?

    • Collect the Waste generated in green bins, tree leaves, animal dungs
    • Put it some red Earthworm
    • cover it with soils
    • put some water on it
    • leave it for 4 to 6 weeks
    • if it rotted and not smelling than your vermicompost is ready for manure

    Plastic Boon or Curse?

Plastic is boon because it uses in the:

    • Toys, shoes, bags
    • Few parts of Bus, Car, Radio, trains, etc.
    • Waterproof material

Plastic is a curse in the following aspects:

    • When plastic is heated: It gives out harmful gases
    • Health Problems line cancer
    • Stray animals eat plastics when it throws away with food.
    • Thrown away carelessly on road, drains, sewer. It choked the drains and water spills on the road and cause the urban flood.

Plastic is not bad but the mishandling of plastic and excess use of plastic make it bad.
What can we do to minimize plastic garbage?

    • The following way, we can minimize the plastic use:
    • Make the minimum use of plastic bags or reuse whenever it possible to do so without any adverse effect.
    • Use of paper, cloth, Jute bags.
    • Do not use plastic bags to stores eatable items.
    • Do not put garbage in the plastic bags.
    • Use vermicomposting at home to deal with kitchen waste carefully.
    • Use both sides of the paper to write.
    • Use slate for rough work
    • Proper disposal practice should be followed.
