Separation of Substances

Why we do separation?

  • To remove impurity or harmful substances
  • To separate two useful substances

Methods of Separation:

  • Handpicking:
    • It is separated by Hand and can be used to separate larger sized impurity like a stone from foodgrains.
  • Threshing:
    • The process that used to separate grains from stalks is Threshing.
  • Winnowing:
    • It is used to separate heavier & lighter components of a mixture by wind or by blowing air.
  • Sieving:
    • Sieving allows the fine flour particle to pass through the holes of sieves while bigger impurities remain in the sieve.
  • Sedimentation
    • Heavier components in mixture settle after water is added to it, which is called sedimentation.
  • Decantation
    • When the water along with the dust is removed from the mixture, is called decantation
  • Filtration:
    • Tea leaves(insoluble solid) are separated from liquid with Strainer, this process is called filtration.
  • Evaporation:
    •  It is the process in which liquid(i.e water) gets converted into its vapor is called evaporation.
    • This method used to separate the solid dissolved in liquid.
  • Condensation:
    • The process of conversion of gases( water vapor) into liquid is called condensation
  • Saturated:
    • It is the condition when no more substance( i.e salt or sugar ) can be dissolved in solution(i.e water). The solution is called a saturated solution.
    • More substances can be dissolved in a solution by heating it.
