Land Usage Categories of India UPSC| Resources | Geography of India

Land Records are maintained by the land Resource Department in India. Only 93 % of land record data is available as:

  • Some lands are illegally occupied by Pakistan and China.
  • No data is available from North-Eastern states except Assam.

As per land record, the following is lad use pattern in India.
  • Forest Land
  • Land does not use for cultivation
  • Barren and Wasteland
  • Permanent Pasture and Grazing
  • Culturable Waste-Land
  • Current Fallow land
  • Other than current fallow land
  • Net cultivated areas
Barren and Wasteland includes:
  • Wasteland 130 million square kilometers in India;
  • 56 % water eroded area.
  • 28 % of Forest degraded areas
  • 6 % saline and alkaline
  • 10 % winds eroded areas.

Permanent Pasture and Grazing:
  • Own by Panchayat
  • Common property resources

Culturable Waste-Land:
  • More than 5 years
  • Jhum cultivation

Current Fallow land:
  • Current fallow; less than 1 year

Other than Current Fallow land:
  • Other than current fallow; 1 to 5 years
Net sown areas:
  • Those land that used to grow at least one crop in a year included in Net Sown Area.
