What is Aquaculture;

  • Means farming in water. It is the same as agriculture; the only difference between agriculture and aquaculture is; in agriculture we farm plants and livestock; in aquaculture, we farm fish and also some kinds of plants.
  • Aquaculture means breeding, raising, harvesting fish, shellfish, aquatic plants in all types of water.

Process for aquaculture;

Four stages of production;

  • Hatchery
  • Feed Mills
  • Farm
  • Processor

Hatchery; includes breeding of fish, hatching of eggs, rearing the early life fish.

In the second stage, fish are transformed into actual water where fish are grown

In the third stage, fish are grown in harvest size.

In the fourth stage, After harvesting, they are packed and send to the food retailer.

Why is aquaculture important;

  • Fish is a rich source of protein as compared to chicken and pork.
  • With the growing population; the demand for fish is growing and overfishing in our natural resources such as the ocean and ponds resulting in unsustainability.
  • Aquaculture can fill the gap in the demand and supply of food.
  • A good tool to diversify the agriculture income
  • It has lower greenhouse gas emission as compared to livestock farming
  • Integrated fish farming with paddy crop is great potential in Indian agriculture.
  • Integrated fish farming with poultry also has great potential
  • The great potential of horticulture and agriculture on aquaculture land

Current Status on Aquaculture:

  • 50 % of world fish is produced by aquaculture.
  • Asian countries contribute 90 % of aquaculture
  • China is the largest producer of aquaculture fish and contributes 70 % alone
  • The blue revolution was started a five-year plan from 1985 to 1990.
  • India is the second-largest producer of fish

Key problems on aquaculture in India;

  • not following composite and integrated fishery practices
  • Water pollution and inadequate knowledge about scientific management
