Functional classification of Indian cities UPSC | Settlements | Geography of India

Many towns or cities perform specialized services and known for special services. However, cities perform many services.

On the basis of dominant or specialized function, the following are classification of Indian cities:

  • Administrative towns
  • Industrial Towns
  • Transport cities
  • Commercial towns
  • Mining towns
  • Garrison cantonment towns
  • Education town
  • Religion and cultural town
  • Tourism town

Administrative towns:

  • Support administration work, most of the capital cities are administrative towns.
  • For example, Chandigarh, New Delhi, Lucknow, Bhopal, Guwahati, Imphal, Srinagar, etc.

Industrial Towns:

  • Primary works are industries. For example, Mumbai, Salem, Coimbatore, Hugli, Bhilai, Bokaro, Kanpur.

Transport cities:

  • Export and import activities are facilitated.
  • For example, Kandla, Kochi, Vishakhapatnam.
  • Inland transport activities, Agra, Katni, etc.

Commercial towns:

  • Trade and commerce town. For example, Kolkata, Saharanpur, Satna.

Mining towns:

  • Raniganj, Jharia, Digboi, Dhanbad, Singrauli are examples of Mining towns.

Garrison cantonment towns:

  • Ambala, Jalandhar, Mhow, Udhampur are Garrison Cantonment towns.

Education town:

  • Education centers are Kota, Roorkee, Pilani, etc.

Religion and cultural town:

  • Varanasi, Prayag, Amritsar, Ujjain, Kurukshetra are religious and cultural towns.

Tourism town

  • Nainital, Mussoorie, Shimla, Ooty, etc are tourism towns.
