 What is Industrial Unrest?

  • Disagreement and conflict between employees and employers are called industrial unrest.
  • Industrial relations between employees and employers are changed after the adoption of the free market and LPG reforms.

The trend of Industrial unrest:

  • There are reduction trends in Industrial unrest in India from 1980 to 2008. In 1980 there was more than 3000 industrial unrest but in 2008 it came down to less than 500 industrial unrest.
  • After 2008, Industrial unrest again increases due to changing market scenarios, and most of the unrest is seen in the automobile industries.

The consequence of Industrial unrest;

  • Employees protest in the form of strikes, go-slow tactics, and Gheraos.
  • Employer show dismissal and lockout.


Cause of Industrial unrest;

Wage issues:

  • The disparity of wage between different industrial workers with the same grade.
  • The disparity of wage of skilled and unskilled labor.
  • The demand for a higher bonus.
  • The demand for a wage hike.

Lack of social security and welfare:

  • Lack of facilities such as hospital, school, etc.
  • Lack of social insurance.

Leave related issues:

  • Holiday and leave demand.

Privatization and automation:

  • Employees strick against the privatization of PSU and automation.
