Issues relating to environmental pollution UPSC |Contemporary Issues | Geography of India

What is the environment?

  • Environment Simply means nature where we live. Everything that is around us such as soil, air, water, plants, and animals is part of the environment.
Functions of Environment:
There are four major functions of the environment.
  • It supplies resources both renewable and non-renewable resources
  • It assimilates the waste
  • Provide genetic and biodiversity that sustain the organism
  • Provides aesthetic services and scenery beauty
Growing population and consumption directly influence the above two factors.
Environment able to performs these functions as per carrying capacity.
If waste is generated beyond the absorbing capacity, it harms the environment, and it's all its components including humans get affected.

What is environmental pollution?

  • Environment pollution means an undeniable change in our surrounding that have harmful effects on human, animal, and plants.
  • The substance that causes pollution is called pollutants.
  • Even a small amount of pollutants can cause much harm to humans and other organisms.
  • Water became polluted if pollutants comprise 0.1 % of water.
  • Even a small number of pollutants in the atmosphere harm huge to human health as we do require 12-15 times more air than food.

Pollutants are in two types:

  • Bio-degradable
  • Non-bio degradable

Degradable pollutants:

  • These pollutants get degraded easily and rapidly in the environment.
  • For example, vegetable waste.

Non-Bio degradable:

  • Some pollutants are slowly degradable and remain in the environment for many decades. These pollutants once release; very difficult to remove and cause very harmful to a living organism.

For example,

  • DDT
  • Plastic
  • Heavy metals
  • Many chemicals
  • Nuclear waste

In the process of environmental pollution, pollutants originated from sources region get spread over other geographical regions by air, water, human, etc.
