Purpose of state reorganization :

  • Administrative convenient
  • Linguistic homogeneity
  • Social and cultural uniqueness

In 1947; 

  • 571 Princely states; merged to 27 states
  • Grouping based on political and historical consideration

In 1948: 

  • Justice S K Dhar's headed commission was set up to reorganize the state on a linguistic basis. Commission recommended state formation based on administration convenience.

In 1949; 

  • JVP committee; set up, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Vallam Bhai Patel, and Potti Sitrama.
  • Rejected the ideas of the reorganization of state based on a linguistic basis.

 In 1953: 

  • Andhra Pradesh formed from Madrash after the death of Potti Sriramla; 46 days hunger strike.

In 1955;

the Fazl Ali commission report came. Suggested 16 states and 3 centrally administered areas.

In 1956; 

State reorganization act passed, the government divided 14 states and 6 union territories.

Union Territories:

  1. Himachal Pradesh
  2. Delhi
  3. Tripura
  4. Manipur
  5. Andaman and Nicobar
  6. Laccadive, Minicoy, Amindivi island

14 states were:

  1. Jammu and Kashmir,
  2. Punjab
  3. Uttar Pradesh
  4. Bihar
  5. Assam
  6. West Bengal
  7. Orissa
  8. Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh, and Bhopal
  9. Rajasthan
  10. Bombay
  11. Mysore
  12. Kerala
  13. Madras
  14. Andhra Pradesh


1960: 

  • Gujarat, Maharastra from Bombay( 15 States)
  • Both separated from Bombay due to feelings of cultural and linguistic identity.
1961:
  • Goa, Daman, and Diu become part of the Indian Unitary by operation Vijay[ 15 states and 7 Uts]

1963: 

  • Nagaland; Nagaland was created due stop the Naga insurgency.
  • Chadernagar, Mahe, Yaaman, Karekal became Uts. 
  • ( 16 stats, and 7 UTS)

1966;

  • Punjab and Haryana;  Punjab separated due to the Punjabi language. Harayana is based on the Hindi language.
  • hilly areas of Punjab went to Himachal Pradesh[ 17 states, 7 UTS)

1969; 

  • Madras renamed Tamil Nadu

1971:

  • Himachal Pradesh statehood[ 18 states ]

1972; 

  • Manipur, Tripura get statehood
  • Meghalaya as a new state, 
  • [ 21 States]
  • Due to ethnic homogeneity 

1975; 

  • Sikkim[ associate state in 1974] ; 22 states]

1987; 

  • Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa[ 25 states]
  • Ethnic Homogeneity

2000; 

  • Chhatisgarh, Uttrakhand, Jharkhand [ 28 states]
  • Chattisgarh separated due to tribal and economic backwardness.
  • Uttrakhand was separated due to ecological homogeneity.
  • Jharkhand was separated from Bihar due to tribal culture

2014;

  • Telangana[ 29 states, 6 Uts];
  • Telangana was part of Hyderabad's princely state and the demand for a separate state was from 1947. But it has been merged to Andra Pradesh due to the Telugu language.

2019; 

  • Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh [ Uts;
  • Total 28 States and 8 UTS as of now.
