 1. You have probably noticed that people in Kalpattu are engaged in a variety of non-farm work. List five of these.

Answer:

The following are non-farm activities in the villages:

  • Basket making, ironsmith, utensil making, pots making, brick making
  • Repair activities such as cycle
  • Nursing, teaching
  • trading
  • Shopping


2. List the different types of people you read about in Kalpattu who depend on farming. Who is the poorest among them and why?

Answer:

The following are three types of people who depend on farming:

  • Big landowner
  • Small landowner
  • Landless laborers

Landless labor who do not own any land is dependent on the other's land. They do not get sufficient work all the time. 

3. Imagine you are a member of a fishing family and you are discussing whether to take a loan from the bank for an engine. What would you say?

Answer:

  • I would prefer to take the loan from the bank as would be cheaper from Sahukar.

4. Poor rural laborers like Thulasi often do not have access to good medical facilities, good schools, and other resources. You have read about inequality in the first unit of this text. The difference between her and Ramalingam is one of inequality. Do you think this is a fair situation? What do you think can be done? Discuss in class.

Answer:

This is not a fair situation, it will lead to discrimination. 

The following should be done:

  • The government should provide some land to landless labor and also jobs so that they can earn money for basic needs. 
  • Free health facilities and school facilities should be provided to these people near the village. 
  • If public facilities are not near then free public transport facilities should be provided to reach nearby the public facilities.

5. What do you think the government can do to help farmers like Sekar when they get into debt? Discuss.

Answer:

  • There is a problem in accessing the banking facilities by the small farmer. Still, poor people are not able to take a loan from the bank due to many paperwork and the unwillingness of bankers.
  • The government should facilitate a loan to poor people with a low-interest rate.
