COP-26 UPSC

About COP and UNFCCC:

  • COP- Conference of Parties.
  • It is the decision-making authority of the UNFCCC( United Nations Framework Convention on Climatic Change).
  • The major role of UNFCC is to act against the threat of climate change.
  • In 1992, UNFCCC was established in the earth summit, and originally, the secretariat was in Geneva. Later, in 1995,  it was shifted to Bonn, Germany.
  • COP held meetings every year.

Important COP:

COP-1:

  • Berlin, Germany, in 1995.

COP-3:

  • Kyoto, Japan, 1997.

COP-8:

  • New Delhi, 2002.

COP-21:

  • Paris, 2015.

COP-26:

  • 31 Oct-12 November 2021, Glasgow, Scotland, UK.
Major challenges and discussion in COP-26:
  • Limit Global warming to 1.5 Centigrade.
  • Net zero-emission by 2050.
  • Emission needed to be drastically cut by at least 45 % from the 2010 level by 2030.
  • India and China have not committed to the 2050 deadline.
