The following are the reasons for the failure of the Revolt of 1857.
- The rebellion had limited regional spread in the eastern, southern, and western parts of the country.
- The moneylenders, traders, and landlords of Bengal worked against the rebellion and supported the British because they felt that their interests would be served better under British rule.
- Modern educated Indians saw the rebellion as a form of backward-looking and believed that British rule would take India forward on the path of modernity.
- Many rulers supported the British. For example, the Scindias of Gwalior supported the British.
- The Indian soldiers were weakly equipped and had swords that were nonexistent against the British Enfield rifles.
- There was a lack of coordination between Indian leaders and soldiers and the same British had Telegraph to inform the Commander-in-Chief about the rebel's movement and strategies.
All these led to the failure of the Revolt of 1857.
