 Question.

Decentralization of industries is more necessary than centralization for the balanced development of any region. Do you agree with this statement? ( UPPSC, 2020, 15 Marks)

Answer.

Yes, agree with this statement.

At present, the industries are the major components for the development of the region, we can clearly see that the areas which lack industries are the least developed as compared to the industry predominant area.

For example,

  • Today India is facing the problems of uneven development. The divide between North India and South India is increasing. If we look at the GDP figures; The combined GDP of the three southern states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka is higher than that of the 13 eastern states (all seven northeastern states, Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha).
  • The main reason for the uneven development of North and South India is the high concentration of industries in South India and the lack of industries in North India.

Despite Bihar having fertile land and skilled agricultural labor, Bihar is the least developed and is at the bottom of the list of all parameters of the Multidimensional Poverty Index recently published by NITI Aayog. The same is true for Odisha, Jharkhand, UP, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh.

Therefore, we can say that the decentralization of industries is very necessary for the balanced development of the region.

Industries should be established in all the areas on the basis of locally available resources and footloose industries should be established if sufficient local resources are not available.
