Why are the western slopes of the Western Ghats covered with thick forests and not the eastern slopes? | NCERT Class 9 Geography

 Question.

Why are the western slopes of the Western Ghats covered with thick forests and not the eastern slopes?

( Chapter - 5 Natural Vegetation and Wildlife, Cass 9 NCERT Contemporary India -I )

Answer.

Precipitation and sunlight are the two major deciding factors for the development of thick forests. Where there is more rainfall and more sunlight, the vegetation is denser.

  • Both the slopes of the Western Ghats have almost the same period of sunlight, but the western slopes of the Western Ghats receive very heavy rainfall by the southwest monsoon and the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats receive very little rainfall as it is a rain shadow region.
  • Due to heavy rainfall on the western slope of the Western Ghats, as compared to the eastern slope of the Western Ghats, the western slope of the Western Ghats has more dense vegetation.
