Forest-based industries:

Forest-based industries are those industries that use forest products as raw materials. And forest-based industries are one type of weight loss industry. That is why forest-based industries are established near the sources of raw materials.

The following are main forest-based industries:

  • Pulp and paper industries
  • Pharmaceutical industries
  • Furniture and building
  • Match industries
  • Bidi making industry
  • Silk industries
  • Lac industries
  • Sports goods and handicrafts industries


Pulp and paper industries:

  • Pulp and Paper industries are weight losing industries and forest-based industries. About 2.5 tons of raw materials are needed for making one-ton papers. So, paper industries are preferred to establish near the area of raw materials. 
  • Pulp and paper industries use softwood as a raw material.

The following are major types of softwood-based raw materials of paper industries. 

  • Coniferous trees
  • Bamboo
  • Sabai grass
  • Bagasse

The Himalayas is the major source of coniferous trees. They are used to make high-quality paper.

  • Assam and Karnataka are major bamboo-producing states.
  • Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh are major Sabai grass-producing states.
  • The residue of sugar cane is called sugarcane's bagasse, they are used for paper industries. 


Geographical distribution of Pulp and Paper Industries:

  • Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Odisha, Assam, and Tamil Nadu are major paper-producing states in India.
  • Maharashtra produces around 18 % of the total papers of India.


Match Industries in India:

Matchboxes are made up of softwood such as Sundari, Semal, Dhoop, Market, and coniferous trees.

  • Most of the match industries are located in West Bengal ( 24 Paragana and Kolkata), Tamil Nadu ( Ramanathapuram district), Maharashtra ( Pune, thane, Mumbai), Uttar Pradesh( Bareilly, Meerut), Chhattisgarh ( Bilaspur).


The silk industry in India:

  • Sericulture is a forest-based activity in the silk industry. 
  • Mulberry trees are the main habitat of mulberry silks.
  • The majority of silks production comes from the mulberry trees. 
  • 85 ℅ of total mulberry silks production of India is done in Karnataka alone.
  • More than 50 ℅ of the silk production of India comes from Karnataka. 
  • Apart from mulberry silks, MUGA silk and Tusar silk are other types of silks. 
  • Muga silks are produced in Assam. 
  • Tusar silks are produced in Jharkhand, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh. 



Pharmaceutical industry:

  • Pharmaceutical industries are also forest-based industries. Many rural households still use plant-based products as primary health care. 
  • Ayurvedic and herbal medicine industries are mostly situated in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala. 


Beedi making industry;

  • Raw materials of the Bidi industry are obtained from Tendu leaves and tobacco. 
  • Bidi industries are generally found in Tendu growing areas of tribal regions and they are mostly found in central India.


Sports goods industries; 
  • Sports goods industries are famous for making sports items such as cricket equipment (Bats), toys, carrom boards, etc.
  • Meerut is world-famous for making quality bats.
  • Meerut and Jalandhar (in Punjab) are producers of 75 % of sports goods in India.
