 Question.

What is the difference between the actual increase and the rate of increase? Work out the actual increase and rate of increases for all the land use categories between 1950–51 and 2014–15 in India.

(NCERT class 12 geography, India People and Economy, Chapter-5. Land Resources and Agriculture)

Answer.

With regard to land use change,

  • To find the actual growth of land use change, we subtract the land use percentage from 2014-15 by the land use percentage from 1950-51.
  • The rate of growth is the percentage of growth from the base level (1950–51).

For example,

in the case of forest cover, the forest area was 17% of the total notified areas in the year 1950-51 and increased to 23.3% in the year 2014-15.

Here the actual growth will be (23.30-17.00) = 6.3% while the rate of increase will be ((23.3-17) * 100/17) = 37.05%.

The following five categories have shown an increase in land use from 1950-51 to 2014-15:

  • Forest cover area
  • Areas under non-agricultural use
  • permanent pasture and pasture land
  • present fallow land
  • net sown area

The following table shows the actual growth and rate of growth for all land use categories in India between 1950-51 and 2014-15.

Rate of increase in percentage = (net area in 2014-15-net area in 1950-51) *100/Net area in 1950-51

From the above table, it is clearly known the actual growth is highest in forest land which is 6.30 % while the rate of increase is highest in the area under non-Agricultural use which is 171.87 %.
