There are 12 major ports in India that are regulated and function by the central government while there are more than 200 minor ports that are regulated and function by the respective state government.

The following are the major ports of India located on the east coast:

  • Kolkata
  • Haldia
  • Paradip
  • Visakhapatnam
  • Chennai
  • Ennore
  • Tuticorin Port

Kolkata Port:

Kolkata Port is located 128 km inland from the Bay of Bengal on the Hooghly River. There is a major problem of siltation in the Hooghly river in Kolkata port. It has lost its importance by diverting exporting goods to other ports like Visakhapatnam, Paradip, and its subsidiary port Haldia.

Haldia Port:

Haldia port is located 105 km south of Kolkata. It has been constructed to reduce congestion in Kolkata. It handles bulk cargo like iron ore, coal, petroleum, fertilizer, jute, cotton yarn, etc.

Paradip Port:

Paradip port is located in the Mahanadi delta. It has the deepest ports which are especially suitable for handling very large ships. It exports iron ore from the region of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand.

Visakhapatnam Port:

Visakhapatnam Port is a land-locked port in Andhra Pradesh.

Chennai Port:

Chennai Port is one of the oldest ports on the East Coast. It is an artificial harbor built in 1859. It is not suitable for large ships due to shallow water.

Ennore and Tuticorin Ports:

Ennore and Tuticorin ports are in Tamil Nadu and they have been built to relieve the pressure on Chennai port.
