Metallic minerals are often classified into two types-ferrous minerals and non-ferrous minerals.
The following are the differences between ferrous and non-ferrous minerals:
Ferrous minerals are those minerals that contain iron whereas non-ferrous minerals are those minerals that do not contain iron.
Ferrous minerals are magnetic in nature whereas non-ferrous minerals of non-magnetic.
Examples of ferrous minerals are iron ore and manganese whereas examples of non-ferrous minerals are bauxite, copper, gold, silver, zink, lead, etc.
In India, ferrous minerals account for about 75 percent of the total value of production of metallic minerals whereas non-ferrous minerals contain only 25 percent of the total value of metallic minerals.
India has sufficient resources of ferrous minerals for domestic needs whereas India has deficits in non-ferrous minerals.
Iron ore is the largest mineral in ferrous minerals in India whereas Bauxite is the largest mineral in the non-ferrous minerals in India.
Ferrous minerals provide a strong base for the development of metallurgical industries whereas non-ferrous minerals provide a strong base for electrical, electronics, and engineering industries.
India exports substantial quantities of ferrous minerals while India imports non-ferrous minerals other than bauxite minerals.
