( Chapter - 7  Lifelines of the National Economy, Cass X NCERT Contemporary India -II )

Answer.

As per the Railway Yearbook 2019-20, the length of Indian Railways was 67,956 km. Rail transport is used for activities as diverse as business, sightseeing, pilgrimage, and transportation of goods over long distances.

The distribution of railway patterns is largely influenced by geographical location, economic viability, and administrative factors.

Rail transport is the most convenient means of transportation for the plains (Northern Plains in India, mainly the Gangetic plains).

The Ganga Plains (Northern Plains) of India is the most convenient means of transportation for rail transport because of the following reasons:

vast flat land

high population density

rich agricultural resources

The Northern Plains is a vast flat land which makes it easy to build and operate rail transport. The construction and operation cost of railways in plain areas is much less as compared to plateau and hilly areas.

The high population density of the northern plains makes it economically viable to run railway transport.

The rich agricultural resources of the plains provide long-distance transportation of agricultural commodities through railways.
