Why did Mahatma Gandhi lay emphasis on spinning yarn and weaving khadi?

Question.

Why did Mahatma Gandhi lay emphasis on spinning yarn and weaving khadi?

( Chapter - 6 Manufacturing Industries, Cass X NCERT Contemporary India -II )

Answer.

Mahatma Gandhi emphasized spinning yarn and weaving khadi for the following reasons:

He supported the boycott of foreign-made cloth, so as an alternative to foreign cloth he insisted on spinning and weaving khadi. He wanted to see India self-reliant in the field of Khadi cloth.

By emphasizing the traditional cotton industries of cotton spinning and khadi weaving, he wanted to develop nationalism among the common people of India.

Weaving Khadi does not require any foreign machinery and we also had enough raw material for Khadi. Yarn spinning and khadi weaving can be easily established in every household with minimum investment.

Handmade Khadi provides large-scale employment to the Indian population

Mahatma Gandhi has always supported a decentralized approach to the economy and political power and khadi weaving is a way of livelihood for many rural families. No big industry is required to spin yarn and weave Khadi.

For the above reasons, Mahatma Gandhi emphasized spinning yarn and weaving Khadi.
