Question.

Why is air travel preferred in the northeastern states?

( Chapter - 7  Lifelines of the National Economy, Cass X NCERT Contemporary India -II )

Answer.

Air travel is the fastest mode of transport among the available modes of transport like roadways and railways. Air transport is not affected by mountainous areas, deserts, dense forests, and seawater, so air transport is also suitable for mountains and dense forest areas.

The North Eastern states include eight states – Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Assam, and Sikkim.

Air travel is preferred in the northeastern states because of the following reasons:

It is difficult and expensive to develop road, highway, and railway networks in the northeastern states due to mountains, hills, valleys, steep slopes, large rivers, dense forests, frequent floods, and international borders. So, there is fewer developed road and waterways in northeastern states.

Traveling by land and water in the northeastern states consumes a lot of time and money.

It is unsafe to travel on the roads and highways in the northeastern states as there are more chances of accidents.

The government has made special provisions in the northeastern states to make air travel accessible to the common people.

Compared to road and railways, the air transport system is well developed and provides low cost, short time, and safe travel.

Due to the above reasons, air travel is preferred in the North Eastern states.
