( Chapter - 6 Manufacturing Industries, Cass X NCERT Contemporary India -II )

Answer.

The process of producing textiles from cotton generally has three sub-sectors:

  • The spinning sector [ produces yarn from cotton fibers].
  • The weaving sector [ produces fabric from yarn ].
  • The garment sector [ produces a variety of garments from fabric ].

textile manufacturing process

Yarn is a cotton commodity of lesser value than fabric and cloth because the yarn is obtained by spinning raw fibers while the fabric is obtained by weaving yarn.

Our spinning mills are globally competitive and are also capable of utilizing all the cotton fiber we produce. This is the reason, India exports good quality yarn to many countries like Japan, the USA, the UK, Russia, France, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and African countries.

However, the weaving sector is weak in India and the machinery in our weaving sector is not good and it costs more to make fabric. Our weaving sector is not able to use high-quality yarn, that's why we are not able to produce a good quality fabric that we can sell in the international market. The weaving sector in India is fragmented in nature. Most of the production in the weaving sector is small units, which cater only to the local market demand.

As a result, on one hand, we export yarn and on the other hand, we have to import fabric to make garments.

If we export cloth and clothing instead of yarn, we will get more foreign money and in addition to foreign exchange, we will also be able to create more jobs in the weaving industry. So it is necessary for us to improve our weaving sector instead of exporting yarn in large quantities.
