Question.

Can you name any genetically modified seed used vastly in India?

( Chapter - 4 Agriculture, Cass X NCERT Contemporary India -II )

Answer.

Genetically modified mustard, soybean, Bt cotton, and other seeds are widely used in the world.

However, only Bt cotton seed is allowed to be grown in India in genetically modified seed (GM seed ) and Bt cotton genetically modified seed (GM seed ) is widely used in India since 2002.

In Bt cotton, Bt stands for Bacillus Thuringiensis which is a soil bacterium. Genes from the soil bacterium "Bacillus Thuringiensis" were introduced into the cotton genus to make cotton resistant to the common pest pink bollworm.

In India, the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) is the apex body that allows the commercial development of genetically modified crops (Gene Modified Seeds) in India.

In 2002, GEAC approved Bt cotton for commercial cultivation in India. As of now, more than 95 percent of cotton is produced under Bt cotton.
