Answer.

Central Highlands and Westernghats act as the water divide of east flowing and the west-flowing rivers of the Peninsular plateau.

The following is the comparison of the east-flowing and the west-flowing rivers of the Peninsular Plateau:

Example:

Examples of the major west-flowing rivers are Narmada, Tapi, and Periyar while examples of the major east-flowing peninsular rivers are Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri.

River length:

Most of the west-flowing peninsular rivers except Narmada and Tapi are shorter in length whereas east-flowing rivers are comparatively longer in length.

River Mouth:

The mouth of most of west flowing rivers is the Arabian Sea whereas the mouth of the east-flowing rivers is the Bay of Bengal.

Delta/Estuary:

West-flowing peninsular river makes an estuary in their mouth whereas east-flowing peninsular rivers make a small delta in their mouth.

Drainage basins:

West-flowing peninsular rivers make smaller drainage basins as compared to east-flowing peninsular rivers.

Tributaries:

West-flowing rivers lack major tributaries whereas east-flowing rivers have major tributaries on their river course.
