Petroleum is referred to as "black gold" because of the following reasons:

  • Petroleum is very valuable for the development of the country and for energy security.
  • So, petroleum is referred to as "black gold" due the raw form of petroleum is thick black liquid; and it is precious in nature.

Petroleum is found between the layer of rocks and it is drilled from oil fields. Major petroleum-producing countries are Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. Other petroleum-producing countries are the USA, Russia, Venezuela, and Algeria.

In India, major oil fields are located in Digboi ( Assam), Bombay high ( Mumbai), and the deltaic regions of Krishna and Godavari.
