Give reasons why Quarrying can become a major environmental concern.

( Chapter - 3 Mineral and Power Resources, Cass 8 NCERT Resources and Development ( Geography) )

Answer.

There are four ways to extract minerals namely open cast mining, shaft mining, drilling, and quarrying.

Minerals that lie near to surface are simply dug out; the process of extraction of minerals from the earth's surface is known as Quarrying. Quarrying involves the breaking, cutting, and grinding of stones to obtain minerals. For example, the quarrying of stone, sand, and clay is done mainly for construction activities.

Quarrying minerals are not an environmentally friendly practice and it has become a major environmental concern.

The following are major environmental concerns of Quarrying:

Quarrying is done in large geographical areas, and topsoil along with humus gets removed while quarrying which is a valuable resource. This may lead to land degradation, which affects the growth of plants negatively.

Quarrying makes lots of noise which causes noise pollution.

Quarrying generates lots of dust which pollution the water and air; it also reduces the productivity of biotic resources which ultimately affect human negatively.
