( Chapter - 3 Mineral and Power Resources, Cass 8 NCERT Resources and Development ( Geography) )

Answer.

Coals are fossil fuels and a very important energy resource that is used as domestic fuel and as raw materials in the industries like thermal power plants and the iron and steel industry.

Most of the industries like therm power plants and iron and steel plants are located around coal mines. For example,

the Thermal power plant of NTPC is located near the Singarauli coal mines.

Many thermal power plants and iron and steel industries are located in the Chota Nagpur plateau because of the abundance of availability of coal in the Damodar and Mahanadi valleys.

Neyveli thermal power plant of Tamil Nadu is located near Neyveli coal mines.

So, we can say most industries are concentrated around coal mines. The following reasons are responsible for the concentration of most industries near coal mines:

Coal is bulky in weight and it cost much when it is transported to a distanced place, that is why to reduce the transportation cost of coal, major industries especially thermal power plants and Iron and Steel industries are located nearby coal mines.

Apart from saving transportation costs, Industries is located near coal mines ensuring coal supply and minimizing the risk of transportation delays and other transportation issues.

Since, thermal power plants and iron and steel industries are base industries for many other industries like the automobile industry and alumina plants ( required cheap source of electricity), so many other industries are located nearby thermal power plants and iron and steel plants; so coal mines indirectly influences the many industries.

Because of the above reasons, we can say most industries are concentrated around coal mines.
