Question.

What is the relation between occupational structure and development?

( Chapter - 6 Population, Cass 9 NCERT Contemporary India -I )

Answer.

The distribution of the working-age population according to different types of occupations is called occupational structure.

The country where the working population is more, that country develops very fast. The age of the working population is between 15 to 60 years who are economically active.

The development of the country depends not only on the working population but also depends on what is the nature of the occupation of the majority of the country's population.

Occupations are generally classified into three categories-primary, secondary and tertiary activities. Primary activities include agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry, fishing, and mining. Secondary activities include manufacturing and construction activities. Tertiary activities include administration, transport, commerce, consultancy, and communication activities.

So, there is a relationship between occupational structure and development. Following is the relationship between occupational structure and development:

If most people are involved in the primary occupation, it indicates a low level of development in the country as primary activities are low-value economic activities. In India, 64 percent of people are involved in primary activities while 13 percent are in secondary and 20 percent are in tertiary activities. Therefore, the Indian economy is basically an agrarian economy.

Therefore, the occupational structure of most of the people in the least developed and developing countries are primary activities in nature.

The occupational structure of most people in developed countries such as Germany and the United States has shifted in favor of secondary and tertiary activities.

The primary occupation structure is a major indicator of the least urbanization and industrialization in the country which is a major indicator of a less developed economy.

The secondary and tertiary occupation structure explains industrialization and urbanization which is a major sign of a developed economy.

So we can say that there is a relationship between occupational structure and development.
