( Chapter - 4 Climate, Cass 9 NCERT Contemporary India -I )

Answer.

There are four major seasons in India, especially in northern India:

  • the Cold weather season
  • the Hot weather season
  • the advancing monsoon
  • the retreating monsoon

Weather conditions and characteristics of the cold season:

The peninsular region does not have a well-defined cold season, because of the moderating influence of the ocean, where the variation in temperature is not much.

Cold weather season is also known as winter season. The cold season begins in northern India in mid-November and lasts till February. December and January are the coldest months of the cold season.

During the cold season, the northeast trade winds blow over the country. Most of the country is dry because the northeast trade winds blow from land to sea and the air is dry. The Tamil Nadu coast receives rainfall from these winds as they move from sea to land and the winds are moist.

The temperature decreases on moving from south to north. For example, Chennai has an average temperature of 25 to 25 °C in winter, while the average temperature in northern India is around 10 to 15 °C.

The northern plains of India have warm days and cold nights.

Frost is common in the northern plains.

Snow falls on the higher slopes of the Himalayas.

The weather in the northern plains is generally marked by clear skies, low temperatures, low humidity, and weak winds.

Cyclonic disturbances flow into India from the west and northwest, aided by the westerly jet stream; This phenomenon is known as Western Disturbance; This causes winter rains in the northern and northwestern plains and snow in the Himalayan Mountains. it makes the cold worse
