   Question.

You are an honest and responsible Civil Servant. You often observe the following:

a) There is a general perception that adhering to ethical conduct may face difficulties for yourself and cause problems for the family, whereas unfair practices may help to reach career goals.

b) When the number of people adopting unfair means is large, a small minority having a preference towards ethical means makes no difference.

Examine the above statement with its merits and demerits. (UPPSC 2019)

Answer.

Not only in civil services but in the present society also, there is a general perception that unfair practices may help to reach career goals; and adhering to ethical conduct may face difficulties for yourself as well as for the family. Such a belief is of those people who do not understand the importance of ethical conduct

This type of mindset has both merits and demerits-

Merits;

This type of mindset has a few merits which are listed below:

Easier and more convenient; Following unfair practices and behaving unethically is very easy and convenient for many people. So, those who do not have moral values or have weak moral values own this type of mindset.

Career goal; Unethical and unfair practices may help in achieving career goals quickly and easily. Career goals like promotions, jobs, recognitions, rewards, or other financial benefits can be achieved easily by unfair practices.


Demerits;

This type of mindset has many demerits, which are listed below-

Loss of trust and reliability; When a person follows unfair practices or unethical behaviors, they erode their own integrity. So, these types of people are not reliable in society or organizations.

Living in fear; When people follow unethical conduct, they do not believe in their own and doubt everyone. These types of people can not live a peaceful life.

Unsustainable practices; These types of unfair practices can not sustain in long run in the organization, society, or country as it leads to financial loss, decreased productivity, and loss of integrity of people.

It creates a culture of corruption; Unfair and unethical practices are the root causes of corruption in a society that create many problems in society. 


In conclusion, while unethical practices may seem attractive in the short term for achieving the short-term goal however they do not work in achieving long-term goals ( mental peace or welfare of society). Unethical conduct can lead to severe consequences in the long run. It is vital for civil servants to maintain ethical conduct in their work, not only for their own personal integrity but also for the good of the organization and society.
