Analyze the Government of India’s “Agniveer” plan in light of India’s defense needs.

( UPPSC, UP PCS Mains General Studies-III/GS-3 2022)

 Answer.

India’s “Agniveer” plan was launched by the government of India in 2022 for the recruitment of defense personnel below officer rank. Under the “Agnipath” scheme, those men and women will be recruited who are between the ages of 17.5 and 21.

The “Agniveer” plan provides opportunities for young people of India to serve in the armed forces. Recruited people will serve a minimum of four-year in defense. Up to 25 % of Agniveers from each batch will be enrolled in a regular cadre of Armed forces for 15 years of service.

The need for the "Agniveer Plan" in light of India’s defense needs is as follows-

Youthful profile for armed forces;

As of now the average age of armed forces is 32, through the "Agniveer" plan, the average age of armed forces is expected to come down to 26 from 32. These youthful armed forces will be major energy sources for India's front-running armed forces. Youth people are easier to train with high-tech technology.

Restructuring defense budget;

The "Agniveer" plan will reduce the salaries and pension bill, which will help money to use for other defense expenditures like the purchase of defense equipment.

Other advantages of the "Agniveer" plan include;

  • It provides unique opportunities for the youth to serve the country and contributes to nation-building.
  • It is the opportunity for Agniveer to train in the best institutions and enhance their skills and qualification.
  • Availability of well-disciplines and skilled youth in civil society.

Agneveer plan is needed for India’s defense as provides jobs to young and skilled youth in civil society and also provides young energy to India's defense.
