( UPPSC, UP PCS Mains General Studies-III/GS-3 2020)

Answer.

Seventeen (17) Sustainable Target Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and 169 goals were adopted by the United Nations countries to achieve the target by all countries by 2030 in 2015. The main principle of these sustainable development goals (SDG) is “leaving no one behind”.

The main meaning of “leaving no one behind” is to provide the benefit of development to the poorest of the poorest people. This also means to reduce inequality in society, between regions, and between countries.

To fulfill the principle of “leaving no one behind”, especially marginalized communities such as women, the poor, tribes, rural population, and minorities have to be added to the path of development.

The following needs to be done to achieve the “Leaving no one behind” principle:

Equity and inclusion;

The principle of sustainable development goals aims to bridge social, economic, and gender inequalities. Development should reach everyone, including vulnerable and marginalized populations, including women, children, persons with disabilities, poor people, and tribal populations.

Sustainable development goal 5 focused on gender equality, and sustainable development goal 10 focused on reducing inequality within and between countries.

Universal access;

Some services like education ( goal-4), healthcare (goal 3), clean water ( goal 6), clean energy ( goal 7), social protection, and affordable food ( goal 2), should be accessible to all individuals, irrespective of their social and economic background.

Multistakeholder collaboration;

Achieving sustainable development goals require collaborations and partnerships among governments, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders. Sustainable development goal 17 focused on the global partnership for sustainable development. It involves collective actions and shared responsibilities to address different groups' and communities' diverse needs and challenges.

In conclusion, the principle of leaving no one behind aims to ensure the sustainable development is not only about economic growth but also about social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and respect for human rights.
