A strait is a narrow waterway that connects two large water bodies (seas or oceans).

For example:

  • The Palk Strait connects the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.
  • The Strait of Gibraltar connects the Middle Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Ocean.
  • The Bab al-Mandab Strait connects the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.
  • The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea.
  • The Strait of Malacca connects the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean.

The strait between India and Sri Lanka is called the "Palk Strait".
