Why is Lakshadweep known as a coral island?

( Chapter 7: Our Country – India, Class 6- The Earth: Our Habitat ( GEOGRAPHY), SOCIAL SCIENCE)

Answer.

Lakshadweep is one of the union territories of India and it is located in the Arabian Sea near the Kerala coast.

Lakshadweep is known as a coral island because it is a group of islands that are mostly composed of coral reefs. Coral reefs are formed by the accumulation of calcium carbonate skeletons of tiny marine organisms called coral polyps. Over time, these coral polyps die and the skeleton of these coral polyps gets accumulated; over time this accumulation grows bigger and bigger and forms coral islands. In the same process, Lakshadweep Island is formed.

The coral reefs in Lakshadweep have grown to the extent that they form a ring-shaped structure, surrounding a central lagoon. This typical formation is known as an atoll. Atolls are characteristic features of coral islands.

The presence of coral reefs in Lakshadweep contributes to its rich marine biodiversity. Coral reefs are essential ecosystems that provide habitat and sustenance for a wide variety of marine life, including fish, crustaceans, and other organisms.

So, for the above reasons, Lakshadweep is known as a coral island.
