     Question.

Why is the earth called the ‘blue planet’?

( Chapter 5: Major Domains of the Earth, Class 6- The Earth: Our Habitat ( GEOGRAPHY), SOCIAL SCIENCE)

Answer.

Earth is often called the "Blue Planet" because of its blue appearance when viewed from space.

There are mainly two main reasons for calling Earth the blue planet:

Abundance of Water:

About 71% of the Earth's surface is covered by water, mainly in the form of oceans. Water reflects and scatters sunlight in such a way that the planet appears predominantly blue when viewed from space. This blue color is the result of the absorption and scattering of sunlight by the water molecules.

Atmospheric Scattering:

Earth's atmosphere also plays a role in its blueness. The atmosphere scatters shorter wavelengths of sunlight (blue and violet) more effectively than longer wavelengths (such as red and orange). The scattering of blue light in all directions contributes to the blue color of the sky when we look up from the Earth's surface.

So, due to the combination of the vast expanse of water on the surface of the Earth and the scattering of blue light in the atmosphere, the planet Earth is called the "Blue Planet".
