Why is it 5.30 p.m. in India and 12.00 noon in London?

( Chapter 2: Globe: Latitudes and Longitudes, Class 6- The Earth: Our Habitat ( GEOGRAPHY), SOCIAL SCIENCE)

Answer.

The Prime meridian of longitude is also called zero degrees longitude which passes through Greenwich, British Royal Laboratory in London. For convenience, the meridian which is located east of the Prime Meridian, time is marked ahead from the prime meridian's time. The meridian which is located west of the prime meridian, time is marked before the prime meridian's time.

Indian standard time is measured on the basis of 82.5 degrees east longitudes. Since, India is located east of the prime meridian(London), so the time of India will be ahead of London time.

If we convert 82.5 degrees into hours and minutes then 82.5 * 4=330 minutes=5 hours and 30 minutes.

So Indian time is ahead of London time by 5 hours and 30 minutes. So if London time is 12.00 Noon then India’s time will be 5.30 PM.
