What are the crops grown by the people of the Amazon Basin?

The people of the Amazon Basin engage in various forms of agriculture and cultivation. The people of the Amazon Basin grow mainly Tapioca, pineapple, and sweet potato. 

However the following are prominent crops that are grown by the people of the Amazon Basin:

Manioc (Cassava): 

Manioc is a staple crop in the Amazon Basin. It is used to make cassava flour, a fundamental ingredient in many traditional dishes.


Pineapples are grown for their fruit and are a common tropical crop in the region.

Corn, sweet potato, Rice, and Beans: 

These staple crops are also grown by some communities for dietary needs.


These fruits are widely cultivated for consumption and are also used in cooking.


The Amazon Basin is a significant producer of cocoa beans, which are used to make chocolate.


Açaí berries are harvested from palm trees and are rich in antioxidants.

Brazil Nuts: 

The Brazil nut tree produces large, nutrient-rich nuts that are exported from the region.


Historically, rubber trees were cultivated for latex production, although this has declined in importance due to the development of synthetic rubber.

Various Medicinal Plants: 

Many indigenous communities in the Amazon Basin cultivate and use a wide range of medicinal plants for traditional healing practices.

Agriculture in the Amazon Basin is often practiced using traditional, sustainable methods that are adapted to the rainforest ecosystem. However, in recent years, there has been a growing concern about deforestation and the expansion of commercial agriculture, which have significant environmental and ecological impacts on the region.
