What are the major cities located on the River Ganga?

Answer.

The holy mother Ganga originated in the Gangotri glacier of Uttarakhand, flows through several major cities in India, and before discharging water into the Bay of Bengal, she makes Sundarvan delta, which is the largest in the world. 


Some of the major cities located on the banks of the Ganga include:


Haridwar and Rishikesh: 

These two cities are located in the foothills of the Himalayas along the Ganga. Haridwar is known for its religious significance, while Rishikesh is a popular destination for yoga and adventure tourism.


Kanpur: 

Kanpur is an industrial city located on the banks of the Ganga and is known for its leather and textile industries. It is one of the major cities that pollute the Ganga River the most. 


Prayagraj ( Allahabad): 

Prayagraj is known for the confluence of three sacred rivers: the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. It hosts the Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.


Varanasi (also known as Banaras or Kashi): 

Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and is a major cultural and religious center for Hindus. It is famous for its ghats (steps leading to the river), temples, and spiritual significance.


Patna: 

Patna is the capital city of the state of Bihar and is an important cultural, historical, and economic center in the region.


Bhagalpur: 

Bhagalpur is known for its silk industry and is located on the southern banks of the Ganga in Bihar.


Kolkata (Calcutta): 

While Kolkata is not directly on the banks of the Ganga, it is located in the Bank of Hooghly River, which is a distributary of the Ganga River. The river plays a significant role in the city's cultural and economic life.
