Question.

Abraham's records are a new beginning in the politics of West Asia. Explain.

 (UPPSC Mains General Studies-II/GS-2 2021)

Answer.

The Abraham Accords mark a significant development in the politics of West Asia, particularly in the context of Israel's relations with Arab countries.

The Abraham Accords were signed in August and September 2020, the Abraham Accords are a series of normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab states. The main countries involved in the accords are Israel, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco. This accord was mediated by the United States of America.

These agreements represent a new beginning in the region's political landscape for several reasons:

Normalization of Relations:

The Abraham Accords represent the first time since Israel's establishment in 1948 that Arab states have officially agreed to normalize relations with the country. These agreements signal a shift in the longstanding Arab stance of non-recognition of Israel and the acceptance of its existence in the region.

End of the Arab-Israeli Conflict Perception:

The Accords indicate a departure from the traditional approach of linking any peace or normalization with Israel to the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Arab countries involved in the Accords have shown a willingness to engage with Israel independently, acknowledging Israel's regional presence beyond the Israeli-Palestinian issue.

Strategic Realignment:

The Abraham Accords reflect a strategic realignment in West Asia. Arab countries view Israel as a valuable partner in countering common regional threats, such as Iran's influence, regional instability, and terrorism. The Accords represent a convergence of interests between Israel and Arab nations in addressing these challenges.

Economic Cooperation:

The Accords facilitate economic cooperation between Israel and the Arab states, promoting trade, investment, and technological exchanges. These economic ties can lead to mutual benefits and promote prosperity in the region.

Impact on Other Arab States:

The Accords have the potential to influence other Arab states to consider normalizing relations with Israel. As more Arab countries establish diplomatic ties with Israel, it could lead to a broader regional trend of normalization and improved relations.

U.S. Involvement:

The role of the United States of America in brokering the Abraham Accords signifies a renewed commitment by the U.S. to play a leading role in West Asia diplomacy. The Accords also demonstrate how the U.S. can act as a catalyst for positive developments in the region.

While the Abraham Accords represent a new beginning in West Asia politics and offer the promise of increased stability and cooperation, they are not without challenges.

The Abraham Accords do not address the underlying Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which remains a core issue in the region. The Palestinian leadership and some Arab states have criticized the Accords for not addressing the Palestinians' aspirations for statehood and self-determination.

However, the Abraham Accords mark a significant shift in the region's political dynamics, presenting an opportunity for enhanced cooperation, economic growth, and peacebuilding in West Asia.
