 Question.

Name the trees that grow in Ladakh.

( Chapter 9: Life in the Deserts, Class 7- Our Environment ( GEOGRAPHY), SOCIAL SCIENCE)

Answer.

Ladakh is a high-altitude cold desert, which has limited vegetation. However, there are some trees and shrubs that can survive in the harsh climate.

Some of the trees and shrubs that grow in Ladakh include:

Willow:

Willows are often found near water sources and contribute to the greenery along rivers and streams in the region.

Poplars:

Poplar trees are cultivated along riverbanks and are valued for their wood, which is used for construction and fuel.

Juniper:

Juniper trees are hardy wood and can survive in the dry, cold climate of Ladakh. They are used for firewood and their wood is highly aromatic.

Myrobalan :

Myrobalan trees are used for their fruit, which has medicinal properties, and their wood is used for fuel.

Apple and Apricot Trees:

In some cultivated areas with irrigation, apple and apricot trees are grown, particularly in the Nubra Valley. These fruit trees provide a valuable source of income for local communities.

Ladakh has sparse vegetation, and much of the vegetation is concentrated around water sources. The region's extreme altitude, cold winters, and low precipitation make it challenging for many types of trees and plants to thrive.
