 Anglo Maratha wars ( 1775-1818):

Anglo-Maratha Wars were a series of three conflicts fought between the British East India Company and the Maratha Empire in India during the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries. 


First Anglo-Maratha War:

The following are important facts about the First Anglo-Maratha War:

Year: 1775-82

Governor General of India:  Warren Hastings

Associated Persons: Warren Hastings, Madhavrao II, and Mahadji Shinde.

Outcome: Shinde was defeated by the British at Sikri in 1781.

Treaties:

  • The Surat Treaty ( 1775) was signed before the start of the War.
  • The Treaty of Salbai ( 1782)was signed after the end of the War.


Second Anglo-Maratha War:

The following are important facts about the Second Anglo-Maratha War:

Year: 1803-1805

Governor General of India:  Lord Wellesley

Associated Persons: Daulat Scindhia and Lord Mornington

Outcome: the Maratha army was defeated. 

Treaties: 

The following were major treaties after the Second Anglo-Maratha War:

  • The Treaty of Deogao( 1803) was signed between Bhonsle and the British. 
  • Rurji Anhagaon Treaty ( 1803) was signed between Scindias and the British.
  • The Treaty of Rajghat ( 1805) was signed between Holkers and the British.


Third Anglo-Maratha War:

The following are important facts about the Third Anglo-Maratha War:

Year: 1817-1818

Governor General of India:  Lord Hastings

Associated Persons:  Baji Rao II,  Bapu Gokhale, and Francis Rawdon-Hastings.

Outcome: Holkar was defeated in Mahidpur while Bhonsle was defeated in Sitabuldi.

Treaties: 

Three important treaties were signed between the British and different Maratha chiefs:

  • Treaty of Poona ( 1817): Between the British and Peshwa
  • Treaty of Mandeswar( 1818): Between British and Holkar ( Indore)
  • Gwalior Treaty( 1818) was signed between the British and Scindia
  • The Treaty of Deogao ( 1803) was signed between the British and Bhonsle.
