(UPPSC Mains General Studies-VI/GS-6 2023 Solutions)

Answer.

The concept of One District One Product (ODOP) was borrowed from Japan as they were implemented in 1979.

In India, Uttar Pradesh became the first state to launch the One District One Product (ODOP) program.

Uttar Pradesh launched it on 24 January 2018 and aimed to create product-specific traditional industrial hubs in all 75 districts of the state and promote traditional industries.

The Ministry of Food Processing Industries is the nodal ministry for implementing this scheme.

Later, it was adopted by the Union Government to be implemented in all districts of India.

There are 75 districts in Uttar Pradesh, each has a unique product. The following are some products under the scheme:

  • Amala ( Pratapgarh)
  • Brass Work ( Moradabad)
  • Locks ( Aligarh)
  • Leather ( Kanpur)
  • Black Pottery ( Azamgarh)
  • Wooden Toy ( Chitrakoot)
  • Perfume ( Kannauj)
  • Wooden Work ( Saharanpur)
  • Soft Toys ( Jhansi )
  • Sports Product ( Meerut)
  • Silk Saree ( Varanasi)

The success of the One District One Product Programme lies in four pillars: Capital, Market, Skills, and Design.

Four schemes were launched by the Uttar Pradesh Government to make a success of this scheme, these are-

  • "Margin Money subsidy Scheme" for addressing finance issues.
  • Marketing Development Assistance Scheme for addressing marketing and branding issues.
  • Common Facility Centre Scheme for addressing issues like design and testing
