 Elephanta Island – A Heritage Site in Mumbai Harbour:

Located in the Mumbai Harbour, about 11 km northeast of the Gateway of India, Mumbai, Maharashtra.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 1987) and is Managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

It was originally known as Gharapuri, meaning "City of Caves."

The caves contain rock-cut stone sculptures dedicated to Lord Shiva, a Trimurti sculpture representing Shiva as Creator, Preserver, and Destroyer.

The cave temples are believed to have been built between the 5th and 8th centuries CE.
