What is ICT? ( Class IX, Information Communication Technology, NCERT Reprint 2025-26)

ICT stands for Information, Communication, and Technology.

It refers to the use of modern tools and technologies to collect, store, process, share, and communicate information easily and effectively.

To understand ICT clearly, let us first understand its three main parts.

1. Information:

Information is data that has been arranged and explained in a meaningful way so that it can be understood and used for decision-making.

Example:

Muskan is a student of Class IX in Government School, Tajpur. She is 14 years old, plays table tennis, and enjoys hobbies like singing, drawing, reading, dancing, and gardening.

This organized description of Muskan is information.

Using this information, her teacher selected her for an inter-school poster-making competition on “Dance Forms of India.”

2. Communication:

Communication means sharing or exchanging information from one person to another using a medium.

It includes expressing thoughts, ideas, feelings, and emotions through spoken words, writing, gestures, or digital messages.

Elements of Communication:

Every communication has four main elements:

  • Sender – the person who sends the message
  • Message – the information to be shared
  • Medium – the way the message is sent (paper, phone, email, etc.)
  • Receiver – the person who receives the message

When all these elements work properly, communication becomes effective.

3. Technology:

Technology refers to the tools, devices, and systems used to communicate and handle information.

Examples of Technology:

  • Mobile phones and cameras are used to take and share photos
  • Social media apps like Facebook and YouTube
  • Radio, television, newspapers, books, and magazines
  • Computers, laptops, and the internet

These technologies help us send and receive information quickly and easily.

Conclusion:

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is the combined use of information, communication, and technology to create, store, process, transmit, and share information electronically.

Examples of ICT Tools:

  • Smartphones and laptops
  • Social media platforms (Facebook, YouTube)
  • Websites and blogs
  • Hard disks, pen drives, and data centers
  • Cameras, satellites, sensors, and computer chips
