Question.
How do we categorise natural resources?
(Chapter 1, Class 8 Social Science, NCERT )
Answer.
We can categorise natural resources in different ways. The two main ways are:
1. On the basis of Use (How we use them)
(a) Resources essential for life:
These are things we cannot live without.
Examples: Air, water, soil
Example: We need air to breathe and water to drink every day.
(b) Resources used as materials:
These are used to make things.
Examples: Wood, coal, gold, marble, rocks
Example: Wood is used to make furniture.
(c) Resources used for energy
These give us power or energy.
Examples: Coal, petroleum, sunlight, wind, water
Example: Sunlight gives us solar energy to run solar panels.
2. On the basis of Renewal (Whether they can be replaced or not)
(a) Renewable Resources
These can be replaced again and again by nature.
Examples: Sunlight, wind, forests, water
Example: The sun shines every day, so solar energy never finishes.
(b) Non-renewable Resources
These take millions of years to form and can be finished if we use too much.
Examples: Coal, petroleum, iron, gold
Example: Once petrol is used, it cannot be made quickly again.
