Explain naturalisation of humans

  Question.

Explain the naturalisation of humans.

( Chapter 1, Class 12 NCERT Fundamentals of Human Geography)

Answer.

Naturalisation of humans means a stage when human beings lived very closely with nature and were completely dependent on it for their survival.

At this stage:

  • Humans adapted to nature instead of controlling it.
  • Technology was very simple and primitive.
  • People respected, feared, and worshipped nature.
  • So, humans almost lived like a part of nature itself.

In ancient times:

Humans had very low technological development.

They did not have machines or advanced tools.

They depended fully on:

  • Forests
  • Rivers
  • Climate
  • Animals

Because of this, they accepted nature’s rules and lived according to them.

This condition is called:

  • Naturalisation of humans

At that time:

  • Nature controlled human life.
  • Humans had little power to change the environment.

This idea is known as:

  • Environmental Determinism

Example:

  • If rain failed → people suffered famine.
  • If forests were dense → people lived in forests.

Characteristics of Naturalised Humans:

Naturalised humans:

  • Listened to nature
  • They were afraid of natural forces
  • They worshipped natural elements
  • They used simple tools for agriculture
  • They lived in harmony with the environment

They treated nature as:

  • “Mother Nature”

Example of Benda:

The story of Benda clearly illustrates naturalisation.

Benda:

  • Lives deep inside the forest
  • Practices of shifting cultivation
  • Depends on forest plants and water
  • Worships forest spirits
  • Uses simple tools like an axe

He feels:

  • He is a part of nature, not separate from it.

This is a perfect example of a naturalised human.
