( Chapter 1: Water-The essence of Life, Class 5-EVS NCERT-Our Wondrous World)
Answer.
A large number of living beings live near water bodies because water is essential for life. Water bodies such as rivers, ponds, lakes, wetlands, and seas provide water, food, shelter, and suitable living conditions for many plants and animals.
Many living beings found near water bodies are mentioned in the chapter, such as dragonflies, water scorpions, pond herons, freshwater turtles, water snakes, reeds, lotus, water lilies, and water hyacinths. Each of them depends on water directly or indirectly for survival.
The following reasons explain why many living beings live near water bodies:
1. Availability of Water:
All living beings need water for drinking and survival. Animals, birds, insects, and plants depend on freshwater sources.
2. Food Availability:
Water bodies provide food such as fish, insects, frogs, algae, and aquatic plants. Many birds and animals come near water to hunt or feed.
3. Suitable Habitat:
Ponds, rivers, and wetlands provide a natural habitat for many aquatic and semi-aquatic organisms. Some animals lay eggs and reproduce near water.
4. Growth of Plants:
Aquatic plants like lotus, reeds, and water lilies grow well in or near water. These plants also provide shelter and oxygen to aquatic animals.
5. Favourable Climate:
Areas near water bodies usually have more moisture and a cooler environment, which helps many living organisms survive comfortably.
Thus, water bodies are very important because they support the life of many plants, animals, birds, insects, and human beings.
