Question.
What can ocean water be used for?
( Chapter 1: Water-The essence of Life, Class 5-EVS NCERT-Our Wondrous World)
Answer.
About two-thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered with water, and most of it is salty ocean water. Fresh water available for drinking and daily use is very limited. Although ocean water is saline, it has many important uses.
Some uses of ocean water are as follows:
1. Source of Salt:
Ocean water is used to produce salt. Gujarat is the largest salt-producing state (producing 75 to 85 %) in India, which provides salt from ocean water.
2. Helps in the Water Cycle:
The Sun heats ocean water, causing it to evaporate. The water vapour forms clouds, which later bring rain and provide fresh water to living beings.
3. Drinking Water after Desalination:
Ocean water can be converted into drinking water through a process called desalination. Countries like the UAE and Israel use desalinated water for drinking purposes.
3. Marine Transport:
Oceans provide cheap and easy routes for ships and other forms of marine transport used in international trade.
4. Source of Renewable Energy:
Ocean tides and waves can be used to generate renewable energy, which helps reduce pollution and climate change.
5. Habitat and Food Source:
Oceans are home to many living organisms such as fish, corals, and marine plants. Humans get food and other resources from marine life.
6. Tourism and Entertainment:
Beaches and coastal areas attract tourists from all over the world and support many tourism-related activities.
Thus, ocean water is very useful for humans, nature, and the environment.
